Summer internships for international students
Applications for summer 2027 run from August to January, and many close early. For many employers the internship is where graduate offers begin.

- Degree results June 2027 to July 2027 Dates for 2027 not yet published; in 2026 finalists’ results came from late June to July.
- Law vacation scheme applications September 2026 to December 2026 Some firms recruit most trainees from these schemes; schemes run in April and from late June 2027.
- Training contract applications (direct) September 2026 to November 2026 Direct applications for 2029 starts; at some firms the vacation scheme is the main route.
- Graduate visa lengths A Graduate visa applied for on or before 31 December 2026 usually lasts 2 years. For applications made on or after 1 January 2027, it is scheduled to last 18 months.

Many employers fill graduate places from interns
A summer internship is often a long interview for a graduate job: the employer is watching how you work, not only what you know.

Internships often act as a vital pipeline for permanent roles

LSE’s Department of Finance says internships are paid positions that in many cases lead to an offer of a full-time position, offered by most investment banks, strategy consulting firms and other financial and tech employers.
Aberdeen adds that it may still have graduate vacancies to fill, so check its graduate programme too.
Internships can vary from a few weeks to a year, and they are often used by large companies to identify candidates for permanent roles.
Apply in the autumn for next summer
Internships for summer 2027 are being decided now. LSE’s Department of Finance says deadlines usually fall later in the autumn or in January, but some close much sooner:

So the advertised deadline is the latest date, not the target. Send the application as soon as it is ready, with a CV in the UK format and time for online tests.

In law the vacation scheme is the internship
Law firms call their summer and spring placements vacation schemes, and at some City firms they are the main door to a training contract. Three firms show the range:

On a one-year master's, read the year line
On a one-year master’s you are in your final year from the first day, and that decides which internships you can apply for. Read each row’s eligibility line against your course, not your age or your last degree.

Apply to both where the year line allows, and let the earlier deadline set your order. Both ask for a UK-format CV, so the one you build for an internship is a good start on a scheme application.

Term-time work has a weekly limit
During term, a Student visa at degree level lets you work up to 20 hours a week. Paragraph ST 26.1 of Appendix Student sets this, and treats vacations differently: see the Appendix Student page on gov.uk (opens gov.uk).
Whether an internship falls in term depends on your course dates: check them with your international student advice team before you accept.

On a master’s, the summer can still be part of your course, so the term-time limit may apply to a summer internship too.
Off-cycle internships start outside the summer, and they appear in the rows when an employer publishes one. Because they may run during term, the same term-time question applies: check your course dates and the weekly limit before you apply, not after an offer arrives.
